just a little attempt at sick humor. to tell the truth i've never really seen the point in having a wiper on the back window, it's not like i go down the interstate in reverse very often. the motor and all is probably about 2-3 lbs, and if you lived close enough to swap hatches i'd consider it.
_________________
red 1990 2 door hatch, 5 speed and 3 cylinders of roaring power!
new struts will definitely help, but your best option is to get bigger tires, like the stock wheels for a '95 up or the vert, a 175-70-r13. If you get them from a junkyard, swipe the speedo gear too, so you make your speedo stay right. (small dif between those sizes) Those tires will give you a wider footprint while still using proper pressure. They do decrease rolling resistance, as they are wider, but not nearly as much as running low pressure.

If you want the car to feel like its on rails, you can stuff a 205-40-r16 in there (yes it will fit), and check on www.teamswift.net , there is a company that makes stiffer springs, and sway bars for these cars.
_________________
friends don't let friends drive fords
I have noticed on my 94 Metro that it is getting hard to hold in the road lately when the wind is blowing or large trucks pass me. I have noticed that it wobbles all over the road when the air pressure in over 30 PSI on the old and new 155R12's. When I drop the air below 28 PSI it feels like it has a better footprint on the road at the cost of less MPG. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am considering getting new struts hoping it would give the car a more sturdy stance.
Ok, I did some math play as well.
Assuming the stock pulleys are crank 130 alt 60 water 130.
I came up with crank 110 alt 63 water 147.
If the 147 water pump pulley will clear everything, that will give me a 25.2% underdrive water pump, and a 19.4% underdrive alternator.
I think these numbers will work great for me, what do you think?
_________________
friends don't let friends drive fords
Subject: 12" tires
Posted: Sun May 11, 2008 7:02 pm (GMT -5)

I had the same problem last week trying to find tires. Wally World said sorry along with every tire place in town. Finally I was able to find some tires at this place no one has ever heard of. The tires I was able to find were called Maxxis tires 155R12. After doing a lot of research I found out that Hercules, Kumho, Nexan, Maxxis, National and Federal still make this size too. eBay had a couple 12 inchers, so search for 155/80 12, which is the same as the 155R12. Here is a link to a online store that claims to have them too in the 155/80 12.
http://www.tires-easy.com/start.html

I have also noticed that if you let some air out of these tires around 27-28 PSI it will help against sidewinds and 18 wheelers. Some people have said on other sites that 185-60-13 is very close to the 12 inch tires if you decide to get larger 13 inch rims.
The egr problem, is that the passage gets clogged with carbon. If your not burning oil, you won't make enough carbon to clog it! Rebuild the engine, and make sure to clean out the passage, and make sure the egr works properly to begin with, and you shouldn't have problems with it.
_________________
friends don't let friends drive fords

my driver's side window rolls up and down grudgingly at best, usually requiring an assist from one or more hands helping lift the glass. (too bad i've only got two) so yesterday i took the door skin off, removed the glass and the window mechanism.
sure enough, the little slider bracket had spread, allowing the roller guide to skip the track. the grease had dried to the consistency of glue. and the lower end of the front window guide rail was hanging free in the air, where someone apparently punched it clean off the door with an impact driver trying to get the bolt to turn. i ended up drilling the head off and turning the stub out with vise-grips.
so i bent the bracket back into shape, removed all the old grease and relubed with silicone, and added a washer to back up the sheetmetal for the front guide rail.
put it all back together, and it works a little better, but i suspect the slider bracket has opened up again so today or this week i'll open it up again, maybe even break out the welder and try to make up a patch bracket. but it's ok, the driver's side door skin backing is floppy and cracked, and the vinyl on both doors is saggy and needs to be replaced, so i need to pull the door skins anyway.
_________________
red 1990 2 door hatch, 5 speed and 3 cylinders of roaring power!
Hello, new person to the board here.

My friend owns a 1991 Metro. He was complaining of it not starting. First I did a compression check, Cylinder 1 was 90 and the other two where at about 65 psi. I have heard there is a egr problem with these cars, is there a way to prevent this? We plan on doing a full rebuild if necessary.

I have a 93 Metro automatic. Most of the time, if it is in regular drive, it starts out in 3rd and stays there. In drive2 it starts out in 2nd and stays there. Low gets me low. Occasionally, it works fine, shifting at the right speeds, and kicking back to second if I punch it. When it works, it tends to work for the whole trip. But next time I get in the car, it's back to its old behavior. Does this suggest any particular cause?

I you want to run it faster, build it to go faster, you won't get as good of mileage as going slower, but you can still get better than that.

What, exactly does that mean? I know that in my 1988 Sprint Metro (the Sprint version of the XFI) the 52MPG that I would get at 65mph would drop precipitously if I pushed it faster. I'm expecting to do a lot of driving at 70-75. (Possibly as high as 80 in New Mexico.) And I am in the market for an 89-94 XFI, I think. But at those speeds, might the regular 5 spd coupe do better on fuel? My Sprint would often be unable to maintain those speeds into a headwind and/or up any sort of hill. The extra power in my current 92 Metro automatic sedan is noticeable, by comparison, and a nice luxury.

Oh, and hello fellow Oklahoman. I live in OKC and used to make the Dallas run every weekend.

The pistons have 2 rings so If you really wanted to you could just leave out the second compression ring but it probably at best gives you 1mpg improvement.

IIRC, for the 1988 Chevy Sprint, at least, the regular sprint rings were each beveled on one side. The single Sprint Metro ring was beveled on both sides. I would be wary of leaving a ring off of the standard metro.
I have since purchased & installed an outside passenger mirror soon after getting this vehicle, and can not compare before and after mpg. I will say that since driving trucks (20,000 thru 18 wheelers) since 1972 that I WILL NOT DRIVE without a right side mirror. There is a lot of good news here and interesting people to read with/about. I think that my metro (95) hatchback (RED), was some time in the past wrecked in the front, as the paint is much better on the bottom of the car, than on the top. (PO had garage that he parked it in, and had put 56,000 on since he owned it.) I am the third owner, and the PO did not know if it had been wrecked, previously, but had not been since he owned it. He bought a new Aveo, and said that it did not get as good mileage as this Metro. He had gas tickets to show that he had jus gotten 49 mpg with it just before selling, he lives out in the country and it is nearly 20 miles to anywhere (large things). He told me that he used Super Tech full synthetic motor oil and changed every 3000, and filter, costs 14.50 at the local WalMart per 5 quarts. Oil does show near black at 3,000 though. He never mentioned that the EGR had stopped up, so I am ASSUMEING that regular oil changes with full synthetic had something to do with that.
_________________
I'm a grouchy,grumpy, ugly dirty old man.
Subject: Time for some math to calculate pulleys
Posted: Fri May 09, 2008 12:54 pm (GMT -5)

Atleastitsnotaford,

The short version: I can give you a 79% set using an OEM belt.

The long version:
Math class is in! AKA: Engineering Nerd Speak

Stock ratio is 130mm / 60mm = 2.166:1
Desired ratio is 2.166 x .8 = 1.733:1

If 120mm / 70mm = 1.714:1, Then 1.714 / 2.166 = 0.791 [To express as a percent] 100 x 0.791 = 79%

The 130mm water pump pulley will turn at 92% of OEM speed.

I will have to price the 6" rod of billet 6061 and get back to you on my cost. I'm just waiting on American Metals to call me back.

Since you understand the carnage of a rock in a timing belt, I would guess that you are running a cover and want the sealing lip. Not a problem, its just a little more work for me by hand. Don't be surprised if I lighten this pulley a bit.

OK, there you have the details. $50? Possibly, if I make a few sets over a weekend. I found a man that does anodizing so that I don't have to invest $300 in a kit.

Later,
