DELTA CAM,

UPS dropped off the Reground Camshaft yesterday. Thank you so very much. I just received all my gaskets as well, so, I'll do the job as soon as I can.

Here's a couple pictures for the community:

Well, it's done.
I had the time and a beautiful day so I decided to tackle the camshaft swap this evening. I really only have one comment to make about the characteristics the XFi cam has given to my G10....three words...

I LIKE IT! :D

But seriously, it was really a simple job and she fired right up after the install was complete. I ran it at roughly 2000 rpm for 20 minutes while I listened to my new speakers, so it wasn't too boring. I went for a short drive and could feel that the power band had shifted a little lower. It is actually a tad bit spunky...even 3rd had a little pull to it. Usually, 3rd gear would be a flat spot in the acceleration process.

I did have to make a slight correction to the ignition timing...It was closer to 0 degrees than 5 degrees BTDC. That was, of course, with the connector jumpered...
I bumped the distributor advanced, back to 5 degrees BTDC where it was before and locked it down.

I went to the gas station just before I started the job to top off the tank, which was half empty/half full at the time. When I pulled in the driveway after filling up, the odometer read 147,000.0 miles...What perfect timing for doing the swap! The last 205 miles on the stock G10 cam yielded exactly 47 mpg and was all city driving and daily commute. Everything is documented in my online fuel log which I mentioned earlier in this thread. All mods to increase mileage will remain on hold until I get some serious calculating done with Delta Cam's XFi cam grind. That means the 13" Salt Flats hubcaps I bought today won't even be installed when they arrive!

Thanks again to Jon Bodwell, for offering me the opportunity to be a test case for his XFi grind...

I will keep everybody posted concerning mileage gains...

Hacksaw out.

I'll be swinging by the gas station after work tomorrow to top off my tank. I'll only have about 250 miles on the XFi cam for it's first mpg calculation when I fill. I'm heading up north to meet with Chuck the Welder on Saturday to strengthen the lower control arm areas with some fresh steel. Since this will be all highway miles, I wanted to get a separate calculation for that tank. As far as the first mileage report that I post tomorrow, I feel the results may be somewhat skewed, since I did run her at 2000rpm for 20 minutes to break-in the camshaft. I'm anticipating less-than-stellar mpg because of that one simple fact, so those first calculations will need to be taken with a grain of salt. Stay tuned.

Hacksaw.

EDIT: Mileage for first 242 miles with XFi camshaft was 42.26 mpg. Again, that included the break-in period of the cam at 2000rpm for 20 minutes.

Well, after 4 days and 434.1 miles, I'm home again from visiting my parents at their cottage. My dad and I drove over to Chuck the Welders' house on Friday and had the A-arm rust repaired and all is well now. During the drive up, my brother followed me with his '90 VW Fox and we traveled at a rate of 60-70 the majority of the time. On the way back, I tried to stay between 55-65 and drive behind semi trucks to cut down on wind resistance.

I achieved 51.03 mpg during this trip, which is a new personal best.

I purchased an XFI cam from Delta Camshafts over a month ago and I just installed it in my 95 Metro earlier this week. I was averaging around 44 MPG before the Cam/Engine replacement. I can also post MPG numbers if anyone is interested? The engine has 90 miles since I completely rebuilt the engine and installed the reground XFI Cam.

Did you do any other XFI things to the car or just the cam? Will be looking to see how your next 2-3 tanks go.

please do post your mileage reports, and also tell us what else you did to your car that might effect the mileage such as tuneups, weight reductions, tire pressure, etc.

I haven't made any changes other then the head was shaved a bit when it was rebuilt. The transmission and ECM are both stock. The timing for right now is set to the factory 5 degrees BTDC. Tires are also stock (P155/80R13) with the manufacturers tires pressure. I will post the MPG for the next few tanks. The first one wont very accurate since I was breaking in the new engine.

XFI CAMSHAFT MPG UPDATE

Postby Hacksaw on Thu Aug 07, 2008 10:45 am

This post will basically be a copy and paste from my fuel log entry for today. I have to go work on changing the temp sensor/sending unit right now...

"Having a problem with coolant temperature gauge reading cold the last two days. I suspected the thermostat might be stuck open, but replaced it with no success. Turning my attention to the coolant temperature sensor now. Since the sensor not only controls the gauge, but also gives readings to the computer, I figured it may have an effect on my mpg. I topped off the tank just prior to changing it, just in case. I was pleasantly surprised at my mileage for the last 175 miles because of the problem and also because my driving practices to and from work have been a little heavy footed. Will update this entry after I change the sensor today."

Mileage was another new record @ 52.46 mpg

EDIT: I replaced the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) Sensor and the temperature gauge in the cluster is working normally again. Like I was saying, this may have been affecting my mileage because the bad sensor was telling the computer that the engine was cold all the time for the last couple days. That would cause an enrichment of the air/fuel mixture by the ECM if my thinking is correct. A heads up to '95 and up Metro owners...If you shop at Autozone, their computer system is messed up concerning the parts I've dealt with today. If you want a Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, you need to ask for a Coolant Temperature Switch that turns on the radiator fan and vice versa. They have the parts labeled wrong in their system. Also, if you need a rubber thermostat seal, they will try to sell you a flat, normal-type gasket...it's not the right one(those are for '94 and earlier)...go somewhere else for that seal.
One last thing. On my '95 Metro, the ECT sensor was located near the back of intake manifold on the passenger side...the actual 1995 service manual stated that it was located in the thermostat housing, next to the coolant temperature switch that has two wires. FAIL.

Hi jonl370,

It looks like we have ourselves a friendly competition comparing our results with identical cars...welcome and may the best man win!

I'll be interested in comparing notes with you on ignition timing advance after we fully establish what these Delta cams can do...
