i'm not aware of any aluminum wheels for the metro, nor do i know whether drilling them is a good idea.
your local tire shop may offer nitrogen for filling your tires. i beleive it's less dense than air, and the bigger molecule is less prone to leak, hence pressure stays more consistent over time.
the wheel-well covers are easy enough on the back wheels, and have been done to good effect. on the front wheels there's a problem, as the wheels stick out when turning. ive seen some discussion of pivoting them so they move more-or-less with the wheels, but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.
there are lots of ways to improve the aerodynamics hence mileage: belly pans, kammbacks, blocking off the grille, shaving door handles and antenna, etc. heck, there's a guy who's cut off the roof on the passenger side, glassed it in, turned it into a 2 seater. claims mileage in the '70s. also, stripping off unnecessary weight should help with the stop and go portion of your fuel consumption. stereo, carpet, seats, anything. the definition of unnecessary varies. look around on the web, lots of people are doing them.
my xfi lacks a passenger-side mirror, which allegedly saves some gas. i miss the mirror, so i'm considering putting one of those back-up cameras in place of the missing mirror, and if it works out, another in place of the driver's side mirror. i've already got one camera, (got it for $25, closeout) so it's just a matter of getting to it, after i fix all the mechanical issues.
